For the past term, I have worked to protect taxpayers, improve public safety, and ensure residents have a strong voice at City Hall.

My focus has always been simple: responsible spending, practical solutions, and putting residents first.

 

About Helen

Helen Shwery is a mother, grandmother, business owner, audit and fraud specialist, and longtime community volunteer.

She has served on numerous community organizations, including as a founding board member of the Canadian Health Care Anti-Fraud Association, a volunteer at Grand River Hospital, and a former condominium board president.

A lifelong advocate for accountability and fiscal responsibility, Helen brings practical experience and common-sense leadership to City Council.

Delivering Results for Ward 1

Lower Taxes and Save Taxpayer Dollars

  • Reduced the 2026 property tax increase by 1.9%
  • Saved taxpayers over $800,000 by directing surplus funds toward high-interest debt repayment
  • Supported responsible budgeting and prioritizing essential services
  • Successfully advocated for a three-day grace period on property tax and utility payments

Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods

  • Advocated for improved snow clearing and winter maintenance
  • Supported speed bumps and traffic-calming measures throughout Ward 1
  • Worked with residents and Regional Council to improve safety on regional roads
  • Continued advocating for road safety improvements in Blair Village, Shantz Hill, Fountain, Speedsville and other areas of concern

Standing Up for Residents

  • Hosted Ward 1 Town Halls to hear directly from residents
  • Advocated for protecting residents' property rights
  • Ensured community concerns were brought forward at City and Regional Council
  • Requested greater public input on major projects impacting Cambridge taxpayers

Supporting Practical Housing Solutions

  • Advocated for reducing unnecessary red tape
  • Encouraged faster planning approvals where appropriate
  • Supported measures that lower costs and encourage housing development
  • Worked with residents and developers to find balanced solutions
